The Transrapid was Germany’s pioneering maglev train, designed for ultra-high-speed travel up to 500 km/h, utilizing electromagnetic suspension for frictionless operation. Developed by ThyssenKrupp and Siemens, the system was a testament to cutting-edge engineering. Dr.-Ing. Florian Dignath played a pivotal role in developing the levitation system. Drawing from his extensive experience, he offers insights into the magnet control system, including the control tasks, design principles, and critical control scenarios essential for the system’s operation.
Despite decades of development and successful testing at the Emsland facility, plans for domestic routes like Hamburg–Berlin were scrapped due to high costs and limited public support. While the technology found success in Shanghai, the Transrapid remains a symbol of ambitious innovation halted by financial and practical challenges.
